If a decade ago the “theme of the day” was Full HD, and five years ago the 4K revolution, then for at least 1 year the most exciting theme in the world of TV is When will 8K inherit 4K? Yes, the question is really “when”, not “whether”. Because the 8K invasion is already underway, and the most avant-garde companies are investing huge sums in the development and sale of increasingly sophisticated 8K TVs despite their higher prices and much more difficult to create and distribute content.
The following few technological facts are confirmed by the capabilities of Samsung’s new top QLED 8K TVs and show why the near future of home entertainment will be measured in the proportion of 7680 × 4320 pixels.
FACT 1 – 8K makes the difference visible on larger TVs
Hardly anyone would argue that the larger TV size matters? In recent years, one of the most popular sizes for TVs is 55 “, and the baton is now taken by 65” and the ever-increasing variants. Think about it: 10 years ago, 42-inch TVs were something like the “gold standard,” and 10 more years ago, we watched 21-inch CRT models and looked like a marble cube. If we follow this interesting mathematical logic, it would follow that in 2030 the most sought-after TV size (if the size doubles every 10 years) should be at least 84 inches. We will see!
I talked about inches and sizes not by accident. Because modern movies and hit series are offered in an increasingly high-quality form (Ultra HD 4K, HDR, Dolby Atmos, etc.), which otherwise would not be visible if you have a TV smaller than the monitor in your office, right? That is why their size is constantly growing – at the expense of thickness. To enjoy 4K quality, you need a TV between 43 and 65 inches, but what will we do when in a few years 80-inch models are widely available at good prices?
This is where the 8K content will come in handy, which needs new models of panels with four times higher resolution than today’s mass 4K. Larger TVs also need even higher resolution video content to deliver the perfect picture. And they do great – you’ll find out how soon.
But there is another fact that undoubtedly makes sense to buy an 8K TV today. This is due to the fact that on larger TVs, a higher resolution is necessary for a good picture. This indicator is measured by the so-called. PPI (points per inch). In short: if the resolution is maintained and the size of the TV is increased, then this indicator drops. With 8K resolution, this indicator is improved, as well as the picture quality.
FACT 2 – Technology models design and appearance
Samsung is a pioneer and leader in the 8K TV segment, so obviously it has the most to show. The latest top 8K models for 2020 (Q950TS and Q800T available on our market) prove that progress in terms of design can be achieved annually.
In addition to the reduced thickness (Q950 is only 15 mm along the entire display), the two flagships also have a changed design with a fixed position of the panel at a slight angle. It has been found to be most comfortable for the front-seat and front-viewer. But even if it’s far away from the screen, the panel’s Ultra Vieweing Angle technology ensures that the picture doesn’t change its quality significantly.
Minimalist shapes and designs are not just the work of product designers. They would not be possible if the technology “behind them” were not available. They allow the use of a huge screen area compared to the models from a decade ago, minimal thickness, lack of distracting protrusions, even stands or cables.
Many people may not think about it, but it’s only when they put their new TV at home that they realize that so many cables are coming out of it that the tangle around it is annoyingly ugly, collects an awful lot of dust and can easily suffocate a pet. Therefore, solutions such as Samsung One Invisible Connection (collecting all the wires and power supply in a thin white cable) and No Gap Wall Mount (bringing the TV to the wall as much as possible) can change the atmosphere in your living room for a moment!
And another novelty. The 8K models and the technologies in them make the Infinity Screen possible. This is the name of the new panels, which already have such a thin side frame that it is almost invisible if you look from a few meters, the black edges are minimized, and the goal is not to interfere with the visual experience. Here are the three sizes of the flagship Q950TS: 65, 75 and 85 “respectively!
FACT 3 – Everything “behind the screen” is extremely important for the image in front
I really hope most of you know what backlighting is. But if you don’t happen to know, take a quick look: this is a system of LED lighting fixtures that take care to illuminate the necessary areas of the screen so that you can see a bright, contrasting picture. Older LCD TVs used several rows of “lamps”, Edge LED TVs illuminate the panel from the side and cause “glow” around bright objects on a black background, but Samsung’s 8K QLED technology uses the most perfect and modern version – Direct Full Array.
It’s, quite simply, a large array of individual LEDs beneath the entire surface of the screen that can glow brightly, dimly, or turn off completely, so that the unwanted glow effect around objects is drastically reduced. The technology achieves a very good contrast ratio and a very good level of black, while at the same time the brightness remains at very high levels – much higher than those of OLED (Organic LED) technology, for example.
33 million pixels. That’s exactly what the 8K panel is made of, which is 4 times more than 4K TVs. Here you will notice the big leap in image quality in ultra-high resolution movies. If at 4K you have 8.3 million pixels for each frame, then increasing to 33 million is a significant jump, but not only in quality. Unfortunately, the required width of the Internet connection, the capabilities of the processor, even if you want – significantly increases the cost of equipment for recording and processing of video studios that create movies.
However, today cameras that capture 8K video are widely offered and bought, with some (such as the new Black Magic model) even shooting at 12K, then downloading the recording to the 8K standard. How all this will affect Internet connections and streaming giants, such as Netflix, Amazon, HBO, YouTube, remains to be seen. But one thing is clear – they will adapt to new consumer requirements.
And another very useful feature – Adaptive Picture. It distributes the light within the specific scene so that the TV provides a clear picture in bright rooms with optimal contrast. Quantum HDR, on the other hand, uses the HDR10 + standard to dynamically adjust frame by frame each scene of the beautiful movie you’re watching. As long as he maintains the technology, of course.
FACT 4 – The brain is the one that processes visual information
This fact imperceptibly overflows from the previous one. When you need to show 8K video, you definitely need significantly more processing power, not just a high-speed connection. Therefore, the “brain” of any TV – the processor, is extremely important for picture quality. The processor used in Samsung’s Q950TS and Q800T models is called the Quantum Processor 8K and can easily convert any type of video signal to 8K, using its sheer hardware power in combination with AI machine learning and AI Upscaling – adding additional information to the video low resolution.
This makes it possible to obtain great detailed textures and outlines, the noise in the picture is significantly reduced, clearing pixel by pixel, and in the end the image is as sharp and realistic as possible. According to consumers switching from 4K to 8K TVs, the visual difference in the upgraded to 8K image is noticeable, making these models the best possible choice on the market today in terms of Hi-Res quality and detail.
Another interesting technology that relies on the processor is AI Scale Net. This Samsung technology uses a special video compression and streaming codec that allows the source (such as a service like Netflix) to check the quality of the user’s Internet connection and upload content to the TV with the required quality so that he has no problems watching. .
It can be used for various sources and video with lower resolution, and, of course, again the processor takes care of everything, and the end result will surprise you. Even old movie titles come to life on the screen, looking like they were shot recently.
FACT 5 – Good sound determines the mood of the experience
When we talk about TVs, we are used to not thinking that they are designed for Hi-Fi maniacs. However, each new model adds even more interesting technological innovations, such as the next big “sound trio”: Q-Symphony, Object Tracking Sound + (OTS +) and Active Voice Amplifier.
Q-Symphony is activated when you connect a soundbar to your TV using an HDMI cable or optical cable. I guess any proud owner of a super cool TV would be happy to add a soundbar, so once you connect it, you will get even better sound pleasure, because this technology allows you to use not only the speakers of the soundbar, but also those built into the TV – at the same time! So the sound will come not only from below, but also from above and from the side of the TV, creating a much better feeling. It is supported by all new TVs of the company, including 4K models.
However, you will find Object Tracking Sound + (OTS +) sound technology only in the 8K TVs of 2020 (OTS is used in 4K models). It creates dynamically moving sound on the screen in sync with the picture, using the built-in speakers and creating a sense of movement in three-dimensional space. Uses an array of speakers located on the back – bottom, side and top. So when you sound a moving object on the screen, you can literally follow it by sound and with your eyes closed.
Active Voice Amplifier is another interesting technology that you will probably appreciate. The TV monitors the noise level around you and automatically detects the screen volume if it detects potentially disturbing sounds. And not only that – it clears and further raises the level of voice flow – the speech coming to the screen. So if someone has to vacuum around you a few times to clean up, its noise won’t stop you from watching your movie or series. Or pause it until the cleaning is complete.
FACT 6 – Smart 8K TVs can control a smart home
The operating system of the 8K flagships for this year is, of course, Tizen. I say “of course” because it’s a well-optimized TV, an extremely fast OS that you can’t help but feel comfortable with. It also supports all kinds of mass applications, although now is not the time to talk about them.
Samsung’s new (as well as some older) QLED TVs have a special control panel – SmartThings. As the name suggests, it serves to integrate and manage all the smart devices available at home. With it you can easily and quickly control everything – IoT devices and sensors, lighting, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and in general any equipment that allows it to be connected and controlled. This really is a whole new world worth trying – it gets used quickly!
However, if the device you want to control does not have internet and Wi-Fi, do not give up. Interesting Digital Butler technology will scan your home for devices that use infrared or Bluetooth and add them to the list on the TV. This will allow you to control and use them at any time.
Tap View allows you to transfer movies or music from your phone to your TV with one touch – in one go. Instead of showing photos or videos to your friends on your smartphone, you can easily share them (the device must be compatible) on the big screen. If you have a Samsung phone, you will even be able to split the TV screen in two, with the TV running in one part and sharing the content from the smartphone display in the other.
In the context of the ongoing pandemic, many “home” features are yet to be useful and sought after. Therefore, the easier you can connect your devices to the TV and use the big screen for work, the better. Remote Access is just such an option for remote access and wireless sharing of the computer display. This can be used for working with documents and accessing files with Microsoft Office 365, for example – while you are lying comfortably on the couch.
FACT 7 – Home entertainment is rising to 8K
Games and gaming, along with watching movies and listening to music through streaming platforms, are part of the modern lifestyle. The upcoming huge event in the world of games – the emergence of the new generation of consoles – Playstation 5 and XboX Series X, will give a new impetus to 8K in this area – not only because of new hardware, graphics and speed, but also because of the support of 8K resolution for new top games. However, these innovations also require additional technological extras, such as an almost mythical one called HDMI 2.1.
The new 8K QLED flagships have this port, but what opportunities will it offer gamers? Well… to play games in 8K resolution, and at a full 120 Hz refresh the screen. Or as they say in game jargon – “extremely greasy movement”. AMD FreeSync adds extra clarity to shots and reduces blur in fast-paced game scenes. Overall, the feature that allows you to gain better control over the games and thus win more, is called Real Game Enhancer +. As, of course, depends on the game console and the size of the TV.
But Home Entertainment doesn’t just mean games. For many people, this includes watching movies and listening to music. And the growth of stream giants like Netflix literally dictates the progress of technology. Samsung’s new TVs also offer a solution for dealing with heavy 8K video files – the AV1 codec.
Owners of 8K devices from the company will be able to play video with AV1 codec, shot in 8K, on their QLED 8K TVs, and the function will be built into all models with 8K capabilities. The use of the AV1 codec allows better compression rates and allows for the support of HDR10 + technology, large frame size, optimization of brightness and contrast ratio. In addition, Samsung is working with partners such as YouTube to provide the ability to stream original 8K content.
If you add the ability to watch directly on your TV 8K video content shot with the flagship Samsung Galaxy S20, you will probably understand how seriously the company takes the future of home entertainment.
FACT 8 – 8K displays are the future of television
Television is no longer what it used to be. Who today associates TV with a device that can watch 1st and 2nd program for a few hours a day? It is now interactive, high resolution, with delayed viewing capabilities and many other extras. And the devices themselves, still called TVs, do ten times more work. They are used for work from home, for sports at home and even shopping from home.
“Lifestyles are constantly changing and evolving, and the television screen is following this transformation to provide us with real-time access to our favorite content and information whenever and wherever we want,” said Yonghi Khan, president of Visual Displays. at Samsung Electronics.
That’s why Samsung’s new models are so interesting – they literally materialize all the innovations most strongly demonstrated in the new flagship QLED 8K model Q950TS. This is the first TV to include a surround sound audio system, realistic 8K resolution and a unique ultra-thin form factor in one.
“8K resolution will transform the industry. Screens larger than 75 inches are the fastest growing segment of the market, and it is in this segment that 8K resolution plays the most important role, “said Joe Stinciano, Director of Consumer Electronics at Samsung Electronics America. “Our line of 8K TVs for 2020 demonstrates the strength of this potential. Unprecedented capabilities for captivating picture and unique “smart” features allow users to fully indulge in what they love as never before. “
That’s right. The QLED 8K TV models for 2020 embody Samsung’s desire to take the lead in implementing, absorbing and reproducing 8K resolution. We remind you that Samsung presented the first 8K TV in Bulgaria in 2018. It is the future and that is why competing companies create and offer their 8K models and technologies. And as the competition grows stronger, real innovation is born, new great technologies are created, and consumers enjoy ever more affordable prices for breathtaking quality. We have yet to witness all this.
