The World Ends with You sales fell short of Square Enix’s expectations

Square Enix revealed the results of the first half of the fiscal year, which ended on September 30th – so the report does not include information on the Guardians of the Galaxy, which was released on October 26th.

The company’s net sales and operating income declined marginally, but ordinary income rose slightly.

Sales of premium games were lower than in the same period a year earlier, despite the release of titles such as Outriders, NEO: The World Ends with You, NieR Replicant and Life is Strange: True Colors. Last year, a remake of Final Fantasy VII and the Avengers was released during this period.

In the MMO segment, sales were boosted by Final Fantasy XIV, although mobile titles were in decline.

NEO: The World Ends with You was warmly received by the players, but financially the game did not meet the company’s expectations.

Square Enix still intends to enter the NFT and blockchain games market, but the company sees two problems: it lacks expertise, and the laws around this area have not yet been formed.
