22 ways how to increase organic traffic to your website

Let’s be clear: the traffic to your site is not what you want it to be. You’d like to get more visitors, but it’s not that easy and it’s not surprising, as 90% of all traffic goes to 2% of sites. This little that remains in small slices is divided among all the others. But don’t be discouraged, you are not alone in this situation. I experienced something similar in this blog and client sites.

Today you will get a solution to your problem. If you run a blog, online store, or information site, this article is for you. Time-tested 22 ways to increase website traffic are waiting for you.

I bet you haven’t seen such material anywhere else. So add this page to your bookmarks and start learning the most effective ways to increase site traffic.

1. Use keywords appropriately

To get higher search positions and more traffic, you need to include the main keyword you are targeting:

  • Page title (h1)
  • At the beginning of the text
  • Title
  • The text itself
  • URL

Key queries still play a big role in ranking a site, so using them properly will help you rank higher in search.

2. Do not ignore the Alt attribute of the images

Make sure the images on your site have the Alt attribute filled in. At least one image on the page should have the main keyword in the title and the alt attribute.

What it will give you: In addition to a checkmark in the eyes of search engines, you will also rank in Google and Yandex in the “Photos” section. Your images can suddenly become a good source of traffic, given that there are at least a few of them on each page.

3. Dilute the text with LSI queries

When writing the text for the site, use LSI queries. So you can improve your search position and even increase your site traffic for secondary queries. LSI is defined as semantically related words and phrases, including, but not limited to, synonyms.

For example, if you are writing an article on healthy eating, including the following LSI words in your text: healthy eating, healthy eating recipes, dietary guidelines, rules, weekly menus: with LSI words, the search engine understands the meaning of your text and sends you only targeted traffic.

4. Become a competitor to yourself

Have you considered increasing your search presence? No, I do not mean raising the positions. I mean a quantitative increase. How about listing your products in other markets?

How will this help? This will help more people see your products. If a potential buyer finds your product in one of the markets, he can make a purchase or go to your website. For greater effect in the future, you can motivate customers to buy directly from your site.

5. Make URLs short

According to a study, most of the pages in the top 10 of the SERP have short URLs. The average length of the first-page search URL is 59 characters. From the visitor’s point of view, short URLs are more pleasing to the eye than long ones. Try to keep this in mind and make URLs no longer than 60 characters when creating new pages. Also, add your main keyword to it.

6. Speed up the loading of the website

Here are two facts you probably won’t like:

  • On average, people expect the website to load within 2 seconds.
  • The loading speed of the website is an important factor for ranking.

Why won’t these facts make you happy? Because I bet it takes more than two seconds to load your site. Therefore, check the speed of your site with the GTmetrix service. As I said, you are unlikely to be excited about the speed of your site.

But how can the situation be improved? The work to reduce the loading time of the site can not be described in two paragraphs, but in short:

  • Choose the sizes you want. Trim them if necessary.
  • Save photos to the web (Photoshop)
  • Use caching (super cache plugin for WordPress)
  • Do not clutter your site with unnecessary code
  • Use a good hosting
  • Do not install too many plugins
  • Use a CDN.

You can also use Google Pagespeed Insights to measure the loading speed of your site. After the analysis, you will receive tips to speed up your site.

7. Squeeze the media

Before the Internet, no one would have thought that one person or a small group of people could compete with the media. But now it is quite possible. Just look at the “News” section in Google and Yandex search engines. Small sites in some niches are tidy, and sometimes even taller than well-known media.

For example, writing the word Tesla in search, I saw that RybinskOnline and UINCAR are higher than such publications as the New York Times or Mashable: if you post news on your site, your main source of traffic is the News section on Google and Yandex. All you have to do is meet the technical requirements and follow some rules (uniqueness of the materials, without intrusive advertising).

Once in the News section, you can easily get tens of thousands of new visitors.

8. Be simpler and people will turn to you

As the site grows, its structure often becomes more complex. Due to the incomprehensible structure, search engines may not be able to index important pages. The most common mistake is when the page is far from the home page (4-10 clicks away). In case of such problems, follow the golden rule – each page is within 1-3 clicks from the home page.

9. Work on the appeal of the Title

If the one with the faster horse wins the race, then the one with the coolest title wins online. Believe it or not, it is. Think for yourself: after reading the title, one decides whether to go to the site or not. In addition, if your site is in ninth place in search results and at the same time receives an indecent number of clicks, the search engine, noticing this, will start to raise it higher.

There are two quick ways:

  • Add so-called amplifiers to your title: fast, easy, simple, step by step, best offer…
  • Make sure you are within 60 characters of your title. Otherwise, the search engine will cut it.

For advanced: go to the Google Search Console and find pages with a low CTR (less than 3%). Using the tips above, come up with a playful look and an interesting title.

Replace the old one and ask Google to index the page. To do this, in the Google Search Console, go to Crawl> Browse as Googlebot. Enter the URL of the page and click “Request indexing”, then after selecting only the direct link, click “Submit”.

10. Dealing with brand mentions

This method of generating traffic is suitable for any site but is especially good for those with certain popularity. The essence of the technique is as follows: it is possible that you or your company are mentioned somewhere, but have not made a connection. You should find such mentions and ask the author for a link to your site.

This is a rare case where 10 out of 10 of your emails can be successful. Everything is logical: because a person mentioned you on his website, it means that he is already loyal to you and nothing prevents him from satisfying your request.

This method is one of my favorites as you can get tons of links to your site in just a few hours. You can use Mention or BuzzSumo to find mentions of your brand. You can also use Google Alerts from free tools. When someone mentions you or your company, you will receive an email notification.

11. Give credit to undervalued pages

Certainly, there are pages on your site that take up 10-30 lines in search. Such pages are underestimated.

Why? Because if you make very little effort, they can rise to the TOP 10. But you don’t … Here you behave like an unfortunate logger who, once he has cut down most of the wood, leaves it and moves on to the next one without knocking down the previous one. . Instead of thinking of writing another article or improving the design of your website, do the following:

  • Find underrated pages. Go to Google Search Console> Search Traffic> Analyze Search Queries. Select Item and Queries.

Filter results by “Positions”. Once you find a query within 10-30 positions, click on it. Then click “Pages”. You now have a page in front of you that needs to be strengthened.

  • Expand the underestimated pages. For a page to reach the TOP-10, you need to strengthen it. How?

First, through connections. Find pages from which you can link to an underrated page. To do this, look for site: domain intext: “keyword”, where the domain is the address of your site, and in quotes is the keyword for which the underrated page is promoted. The search results will show pages from which you can place a link. Select from the list those with more inbound connections.

Second, look at the CTR on the Search Console page. If it is less than 3%, repeat the title following the advice above. Then ask to index the page through the “Browse as Googlebot” tab.

Well, if you did everything right, you just have to wait for the results.

12. Make a transcript of the video

When creating video content, keep in mind that robots still can’t recognize videos as real people. Therefore, if you want to increase traffic to your site, post the textual content of the video.

In the case of an online store, write about the advantages and disadvantages of the product you learned about during the review. If you are blogging, make a short text video.

13. Content update

You know, there are a lot of similarities between content and food. For example, both the first and the second have an expiration date. Of course, there are types of content that can be compared to the Soviet stew. But most of all, the content loses its relevance over time. If you have a mature site and have a lot of information in it, it’s time to think about updating them.

What is it for? After the update, some materials may: increase in search results, start ranking for new keywords, get even more posts and shares.

Give preference to those articles that:

  • They are in 4-20 positions in the search
  • Needs update (out-of-date information)
  • Important from a business point of view.

Add relevant information, remove outdated data, make the article deeper and more practical.

14. Building relationships

There are two extremes in terms of promoting links to websites:

The first extreme is when people believe that the era of relationships is over and they no longer play any role.

The second extreme is when, in pursuit of the number of relationships, people buy them in tons indiscriminately.

And the truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle – links are still important in promoting the website. According to a study, the first two sites in the search results have 38% of all links from sites in the top 10. But…the links will help to promote the site only if they lead from normal, reputable resources. Getting these connections takes time, although there are quick methods. A classic in the genre is writing guest posts and participating in expert surveys.15. Improving behavioral factors

Search engines look at your site under a microscope. They analyze everything: clickthrough rate (CTR), dropout rate, average site time, viewing depth. All these indicators affect the position of the site in search results. By improving some indicators, you will get higher positions.

The main indicators that you need to improve are the dropout rate and the average time of the site. Universal methods to help you with this:

  1. Proper text formatting. Good writing holds a person’s attention. Bad text is not interesting. When composing a text, write in simple words. Pay attention to the design: make short paragraphs, emphasize important phrases in bold. Take the time to write a good title and introduction. Don’t skimp on intriguing subtitles.
  2. Add media files. It’s like the saying, “It’s better to see once than to hear a hundred times.” Use images, videos, infographics, screenshots, animations – everything that helps to convey information and hold the reader’s attention.
  3. Reconnect. Your site pages should be linked. With the right link, search engines will be able to index all pages of the site, the average time will increase and the number of failures will decrease. If you have a blog, links to other materials in the appropriate place in each article. If you have an online store, the “buy with this product” and “similar products” blocks.

16. Get rid of broken connections

Broken links hurt the usability of the site. The person who follows the relationship expects to see something useful for himself. But instead, he sees a 404 error:

With this in mind, search engines lower the position of sites that have many broken links.

If you want to drive more traffic for free, your job is to find broken links on your site and fix them. If you use WordPress, the Link Checker plugin will help you. You can also use universal tools such as Xenu and Screaming Frog.

Once you find the broken links, do the following:

  • If possible, remove them
  • If your article loses value offline, replace it with a working one. Just find an equivalent article/page and a link to it.

17. Switch to HTTPS

You may have already heard: an HTTP site in the Chrome browser is marked as insecure. In addition, HTTPS sites will receive a ranking advantage. This is certainly not such a big advantage, but it is still there. If you have a registration on the site or work with the personal data of users, immediately switch to HTTPS. If you’re promoting your blog, migrating to HTTPS is recommended.

18. Link to reputable sites

Many bloggers do not like to link to other sites. There are two main reasons for this.

  • Very often bloggers sell links, so posting them for free seems crazy
  • Many people think that by linking to a foreign site, they will lose weight on the page.

I advise you not to be like everyone else and to put 2-3 links to sites of trust in each article. First, it is good in the eyes of search engines if you make links to reputable sites. Second, the authors of these sites can help promote your article. What’s more, it’s a good way to meet a lot of great bloggers.
SEO for regional business

19. Keywords

Promoting regional business has its characteristics. At a minimum, when optimizing such a site, you should include the region/city and the main keyword in:

  • Title
  • Text of the page
  • URL
  • Alt attribute for images.

For example, if you sell flowers in Moscow, you should use the phrases “Flowers in London”, “Flower delivery in London” in the above places.

20. Company information

Include information about the company (name, address, phone number) on each page of the site. The data must be formatted in the schema markup.

21. Ask for feedback

When promoting a regional website, it is especially important to get positive feedback on Google and Yandex. Be proactive and don’t hesitate to ask customers for feedback. You can do this individually or automate the process using email (triggered emails).

22. Use Google Business

Register your business with Google My Business. After verification, it will appear on Google maps and will appear in local search. Conveniently, users will be able to see the necessary information directly in the search results: opening hours, address, photo of the building, and reviews. In addition, people will be able to get directions to your company on Google maps.

For example:

If you are a cafe owner, a person looking for a place to eat nearby will see all the nearby places marked on the maps, including your place. If desired, you can call and reserve a table.
